Understanding Lunation Cycles

The New Moon marks the beginning of each lunation cycle.  It is the moment when the moon lines up with the sun in the same degree of the same sign of the zodia).  From the perspective of Earth, the moon is not visible at the "new moon" phase because it cannot reflect the sun's light in our direction.  Though seemingly cloaked in darkness, the moon does still receive and reflect the sun's light back towards the sun--an exchange of energy that vitalizes and energizes the moon to begin her approx. 29.5 lunation cycle during which she will orbit the Earth, reflecting various degrees of the Sun's light to Earth in the process.
This cyclical relationship of the moon and sun in relation to the Earth exist as archetypal symbols of mother (feminine life-force), father (masculine life-force), conception (New Moon), and birth (Full Moon).  In our own lives we can find the New Moon initiating and vitalizing some area of our lives, bringing us some metaphorical "conception" that correlates with the sign in which the New Moon takes place (the one on Nov. 6, 2010 will be in Scorpio).  In the days following the New Moon, the Moon will wax (or begin to look larger as it reflects more and more light from the Sun toward the Earth) as whatever was "born" under the New Moon begins to progress and take shape for us.  Under the Full Moon (when the Moon's face is full of the reflected light of the Sun) we can see these issues culminate.  During the Full Moon we may find issues "coming to a head" as they are illuminated in a way that helps us to adjust and reassess our progress.  Sometimes a Full Moon can bring dramatic changes to whatever issues were stimulated or initiated under the New Moon.
Following the Full Moon, the moon will begin to wane, reflecting less and less of the Sun's light to Earth.  This half of the moon's cycle is similar to the "denouement" of a short story, play or novel, during which we tie up the loose ends and find closure/resolution for the issues of that particular cycle.

New Moon at 13' Scorpio?  What Does it Mean for You, Me, & Everyone?

On Nov. 6, 2010 at 12:51am EST (click HERE to convert to your own time zone, if different) we will experience a New Moon at 13 degrees of Scorpio.  Since this lunation cycle begins in Scorpio, it will carry with it the energy of that sign throughout its full cycle, bringing each of us experiences, insights, and changes in our lives that are "Scorpionic" in nature.  On a small scale, for each of us, themes of Birth & Death; painful but necessary major transformations; secrets and skeletons in the closet; power struggles; inheritances (both monetary and otherwise); & psychological damage and/or healing are all areas potentially stimulated by the New Moon when it occurs in the sign of Scorpio.
Scorpio asks you to answer to your authentic self.  NO facades.  NO hiding from the root issues that compel your addictions, compulsions, or co-dependencies.  On a large scale, as blogger Willow writes at Willow's Web Astrology, "We're busting through some ancient bondage here - centuries or millenia-old grudges and bad feelings and the oppressive power dynamics that have kept us painfully pinned under it all, reliving it."  In the same article, Willow also examines and articulates (much more fully than I ever could) the significance of the New Moon taking place at the 13th degree, especially considering (as Willow points out) it will be followed by 5 subsequent and consecutive New Moons at the 13th degrees of Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, and Aries.  If you're interested in understanding this upcoming moon cycle (and how other current cycles are bringing us all to greater awareness) I suggest you read her full article, "Anaretic Aries Full Moon Heading to a New Moon in Scorpio on Lucky 13."
And as many astrologers have also pointed out, the 13th degree of Scorpio was also the turning point of Venus as the planet made its yearly retrograde back in October.  We are being asked to examine (in a psychologically healing, Scorpionic way) what we really want, need, and offer in regards to relationships of all varieties.  What holds us back from an ability to truly bond with others?  How do we find and nourish emotional safety for ourselves without succumbing to the co-dependencies, jealousy, and possessiveness that keeps us from the very intimacy we seek? How do our control issues and shadow selves show themselves this month, and what do we do about them?  These are all questions we would be particularly rewarded by asking and earnestly answering during the Scorpio lunation cycle.

Where Does the New Moon Fall in Your Chart, By House?
& How will the Moon Cycle Express Itself There?

FIRST HOUSE
Your sense of self and identity.  Focus area:  Who are you, truly?  Who are you distinct from the influences and pressures of those around you?

SECOND HOUSE
Personal resources and ways that you create comfort and security for yourself in the material realm.  Are you staying comfortable when you really should be pushing your boundaries in order to experience spiritual growth?

THIRD HOUSE
Your ability to communicate your emotional needs to others and make connections through honest and powerful use of language.

FOURTH HOUSE
Your roots, past, homelife, and family.  Healing from past trauma so as to end a cycle of pain before it threatens to continue into your future and/or the futures of the people you love.

FIFTH HOUSE
Playfulness, romance, experiencing life in a carefree and childlike way.  Giving and receiving in relationships in an open and generous way.  The New Moon here asks you to acknowledge your brilliance and be willing to shine your light onto other people with an open heart.

SIXTH HOUSE
Work, duty, and serve to others.  Your ability to attempt to refine and "perfect" without allowing yourself to fall into the worrisome trap of thinking "it's never good enough."  Physical health and well-being.

SEVENTH HOUSE
One-on-one relationships, particularly romantic relationships.  You are likely undergoing major transformations and receiving important revelations about your relationship life at this time.

EIGHTH HOUSE
There is a particular focus for you this month regarding psychological healing and transformation.

NINTH HOUSE
Learning, education, cultural expansion/exploration, travel.  This may be a good time to travel to a place you've never been in order to learn more about yourself in the process.  At the very least, this placement asks you to explore new territory, metaphorically or otherwise.  Take a class, read a book, watch a doumentary... explore some new knowledge in-depth and gain a better understanding of your own depths as you do so.

TENTH HOUSE
Public life!  This cycle will influence your career, marriage (legally recognized or not), and/or family that you've built for yourself.  Your ability to achieve recognition for yourself through work and/or family-building will require examination during this lunation cycle.

ELEVENTH HOUSE
Groups of friends (rather than one-on-one friendships that would pertain to 7th House); associations, organizations, networks.  Are you a member of a religious or political group?  A coven, the PTA?  Any organizations or groups of people with whom you associate and share like-goals and values will concern you this month as you experience emotional transformations/realizations in relation to these associations.

TWELFTH HOUSE
Intuitive knowing, universal compassion and connectedness, isolation in seeking introspection.  This will be a particularly useful time to meditate and seek out time alone to contemplate ways in which you can heal yourself on profound spiritual levels.  The more inner-peace find for yourself, the more peace there will be in the world as well.

New Moon in Scorpio Aspects to Natal Planets

If the New Moon at 13' Scorpio makes aspects to any of the following planets in your Natal Chart (the chart constructed for the moment of your birth), then look for the following if making aspects to:

SUN
Who are you, and how do you radiate emotional warmth?  In knowing yourself and honoring your individuality, you are better able to honor and accept the contributions of others.

MOON
This will be a particularly emotional month for you.  Self-reflection and psychological healing will be themes for the month.

MERCURY
What do you know about the unspoken motives of others and your own unconscious motives?  How do you know what you know?  This is a good time to broach emotionally difficult communication with others with the intention of "getting to the heart of the matter" and working through emotional blocks.  Journalling, songwriting, or writing poetry may prove especially helpful to you at this time.

VENUS
Relationships, relationships, relationships!!!  Figure them out!  There are transformations pressing to be made.  There is a soul-level healing at work in your life at this time, and you will see these transformations realize themselves most fully through the ways you form and refine existing relationships as well as in the ways you attract new people and relationships to you.

MARS
Your desires to initiate new projects and opportunities for yourself will receive a boost of willpower this month.  You are asked to be self-directed in achieving your goals and realizing your aspirations.

Learning From the New Moon Event Chart

For additional insight into how the New Moon in Scorpio cycle will affect you, create an astrological chart for the moment the New Moon commences.  Before, we talked about where the Sun and Moon fall in your chart by house (because they will be both in exactly the same place, creating a New Moon together), but it is also helpful to consider the New Moon Chart as a whole in order to understand the energies that will be carried throughout this lunation cycle from beginning to end.  So, where are Mercury, Venus, Mars and the rest aspecting your natal planets?
Using my own chart as an example, not only will the New Moon be transiting my natal Mars, but the transiting Mars (at the moment the New Moon occurs) will be exactly conjunct my natal Midheaven (the point of the astrological chart correlating most strongly with issues of career and family-building).  I can expect an increased need to initiate work for myself that will support my long-term career and family goals.
How are the transiting planets affecting your Natal Chart (and consequently, of course, affecting you?) at the New Moon?  If you would like astrological guidance regarding the upcoming Lunation Cycle and how it will affect you, email me to order a "November New Moon" reading.
