In this blog entry I'll give an overview of how and why the 12th House often creates a difficult experience for those with personal planets there. I'll also give specific insights into how each of the personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars) operate in the 12th House.

The twelfth house is certainly an interesting place for a planet, especially a personal planet, to fall in a natal birth chart. The 12th House is sort of like the doorway between the world of spirit (the Great Beyond, Heaven, Cosmic Oneness) and the often harsh world of Earth Reality. When people report near-death experiences and talk about "walking toward the light" and being welcomed with the strongest, most all-encompassing love that they have ever felt, they are experiencing the very best of what the 12th House has to offer. Yes, the 8th House is the house of Death, but the 12th House is what lies BEYOND death, where the ego can no longer separate us from our understanding of loving ONENESS

Navigating the "real world" can therefore be even more difficult for a person with 12th House placements because even if their conscious mind does not remember, their SOUL remembers that experience of unconditional, blissful, permeating LOVE and it wants to return!

However, just like those who have near-death experiences and are told they must return to their earthly lives, the 12th House person is constrained within the harsh reality of their earthly incarnations and they have to learn to cope with it. Therefore, one of the reasons the 12th House has a reputation of being a house of SELF-UNDOING is that 12th House people can resort to ESCAPIST and ADDICTIVE tendencies in order to replicate as best as possible the world of blissful love that they cannot access while incarnate in their earthly life.

Another reason is that the 12th House also is the house of the individual and collective UNCONSCIOUS. So, when a 12th House person is not actively managing the needs of their 12th House planet in a purposefully aware manner, they can live out the meanings and needs of the 12th House planet in VERY UNCONSCIOUS ways.

It can be really difficult for a person with 12th House planets to feel that the needs of their 12th House planet are being met, no matter what experiences they are having. Many times it is often as though OTHER PEOPLE have more access to the benefits of that person's 12th House planet than the person does themselves, to the point that others might use the 12th House person's planetary energy for themselves. This is because the 12th House is where our energy bleeds into the collective unconscious and boundaries separating us from others are quite permeable.

The 12th House person may even begin to think that what others want out of life are the very things that the 12th House person wants. It is EXTREMELY important for a 12th House person to get adequate solitude to separate their energies from others so that they truly know what they want from life rather than absorb other people's desires/tendencies and take them on as their own.

SUN in the 12th House Difficulties
When someone's sun is in their 12th House, their need to feel special, to feel that they matter, and to feel validated in their very existence always seems to be thwarted. When they do get attention, it does not fulfill them or validate their ego and they may even feel that the attention they get is actually INVALIDATING, which ends up making them feel that they do not matter to others. We all have an ego, and we all have that need to feel special. For a 12th House Sun person, however, regardless of how much the person may appear to shine, they will not feel admiration for their "shine" very easily. They will have a difficult time seeing that they truly matter to others the way that they want to matter. Learning how to SELF-CONGRATULATE, SELF-VALIDATE, and SELF-ENCOURAGE is extremely necessary for 12th House Sun people since they will often find that external validation, attention, and encouragement from others is either non-existent or falls short of their expectations/needs.

Another issue for Sun in the 12th House is that other people will try to get THEIR ego needs (or needs to shine, needs for attention) met through the 12th House Sun person. Other people can drain the solar light of the 12th House sun person through really demanding/expecting to be able to USE the 12th House Sun person for their own ego needs/desires. Nefarious folks will see that the Sun in 12th House person has trouble VALIDATING, ENCOURAGING, and/or FEELING PROUD of themselves and these nefarious others will be glad to provide flattery to the 12th House Sun person as a means of manipulating and using the 12th House Sun person. They may try to use their associations with the 12th House Sun person to obtain power, influence, attention, and admiration for themselves.

When your Sun is in the 12th House, regularly take time to yourself to think about what YOU really want to accomplish with your life. Are your current endeavors serving your own values and life purpose, or are they mostly serving the purpose of people who want to make use of your ability to SHINE? Time spent in solitude and reflection may help you retain more control of your sense of vitality so that it is not drained by others who can tend to their own specialness without using up all of yours!

Also, see yourself as a beautiful prism that is a conduit for the love light of the universe. When you understand and truly value your special ability to be a source through which divine love flows, there is no longer such a need to seek approval from others in order to feel alive and vibrant.

MOON in the 12th House Difficulties
When someone's Moon is in the 12th House, it will be very difficult for that person to feel that their emotional needs are ever met. When they express emotional needs, it seems that other people do not understand, care, or have the capacity to understand what the 12th House Moon person feels or why they feel that way. Additionally, nobody seems capable of soothing the 12th House Moon person's emotional discomforts. The 12th House Moon person can feel chronically emotionally unsafe. They may feel they have to hide or suppress their emotions and emotional needs.

Additionally, the 12th House Moon person may have EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCES that are difficult to explain, or that are in response to HIDDEN and/or SECRETIVE experiences they've had, and therefore they find they have nobody to turn to for support. They can feel like they're having emotional experiences that nobody else has ever had, due to the circumstances that provoked them, and therefore nobody could relate (or perhaps even believe) that they have any reason to feel the way that they do. The Moon is an intuitive planet in a very MYSTICAL, OTHERWORLDLY house here, and this can lead to strong empathic insights and/or psychic experiences. It may be difficult for the Moon in the 12th House person to explain these emotional intuitions that they have, or to find support to emotionally cope with their psychic/supernatural experiences.

This heightened intuitive/empathic ability also means that ironically OTHER PEOPLE will often feel easily soothed BY the Moon in the 12th House person and so will often turn to the Moon in 12th House person for their own emotional needs to be met. Unfortunately nobody seems able to meet the Moon in 12th Person's emotional needs! It may seem unfair, but when a person has their Moon in the 12th House they will really need to learn how to SELF-SOOTHE and SELF-PROCESS their emotions (which is not to say that psychotherapy won't be useful, but even in the case of a therapist, there will be some emotional needs that even therapists cannot meet for them).

This Moon placement also has a tendency to bury their emotions (and emotional needs) until they are in a moment of emotional crisis, at which point those emotional needs EXPLODE with a tremendous gaping neediness that will make it even more difficult than usual for other people to have the capacity to help the Moon person cope. So attending to emotional needs as they go along is very important. Moon in the 12th House people will also need to learn how to establish firm EMOTIONAL BOUNDARIES with others so that they are not drained.

Time spent in solitude is great (and necessary!) for any 12th House person, because this house placement can lead to merging with others in confusing ways. In particular for a Moon in the 12th Person, there can be a tendency to absorb other people's emotions and not realize those emotions are not their own. The Moon in the 12th House person will need solitude so that they can separate from other people's emotions (and other psychic "junk") and figure out what they themselves truly feel.

MERCURY in the 12th House Difficulties
When someone's Mercury is in the 12th House, their intellect will often be genius in nature as they have access to the cosmic mind. They can be more prone to experiences of clairsentience, or the ability to just "know" things without having a logical means by which to know them.

Since Mercury is devoid of emotions, its placement in the 12th House presents far fewer difficulties than the other placements. Mars has to do with passion, the Moon with our emotional safety needs, Venus with our personal connections and the ability to feel understood in relationships, and the Sun with our need to feel important and special. All of these planets have an inherently emotional impact. Mercury, on the other hand, simply gathers and disseminates information.

The benefits of a 12th House Mercury placement then, far outweigh the negatives because its impact will not be nearly as emotionally difficult as those of other personal planets.
The biggest "negative" of this placement may just be the difficulty of explaining to people how/why you know things. The answer, "I just know!" is not going to be taken seriously by many people.

A major positive of this placement is that you will have a strong insight into someone else's thinking--perhaps even to the point of experiencing TELEPATHY or MIND-READING. You will understand what other people are communicating (or trying to communicate) even if they are not articulating themselves very well. You also have a very keen insight into the SUBTEXTUAL MEANINGS of what a person is communicating. In other words, YOU CAN READ BETWEEN THE LINES!

Many people with this placement struggle with a feeling that they are not adequately expressing themselves, but ironically people with Mercury in the 12th House are HIGHLY ADEPT COMMUNICATORS. If you have this placement, you will intuitively know how to express your own thoughts to others in the way they will best understand. It may not feel to you that you are, because the insights in your MIND are so otherworldly there may not be adequate words to express them. You may think in more symbolic ways. Perhaps words do not exist to express the insights you are having. However, trust me, your communications as a Mercury in the 12th House person really do come across as profound to other people, more often than not, and they do make quite an impact.

With this placement, as with any 12th House placement, you may benefit from spending time EMPTYING or CLEARING your mind through meditation, mindfulness, time spent in solitude, time spent in nature, or time spent in/near water. If you work on increasing your PSYCHIC TALENTS, you will likely be very successful in doing so. You may find a "bump" in psychic energies when experiencing major transits to your 12th House Mercury as well.

VENUS in the 12th House Difficulties
When someone's Venus is in the 12th House, the social needs of the person are difficult to satisfy. This doesn't mean they won't have a social life or relationships (to the contrary, they are often highly sought after socially) but they will tend to feel as though they are not receiving the benefits of their social relationships nearly as much as those they are in relationships with.

Although astrologers speak of Venus as being primarily about romantic relationships, this planet also more broadly represents our approach to (and experience of) our social lives, whether romantic or platonic. Our Venus shows the energies we utilize to draw people toward us. It also shows the manner in which we seek to learn more about ourselves through comparing/contrasting ourselves with other individuals. So Venus in the 12th's effects will be apparent across all ONE-TO-ONE social dynamics the person experiences, whether those relationships be through friendship, family ties, business associations, casual acquaintance, or romantic partner.

When Venus is in the 12th House it gains an almost psychic insight into what others need from social interactions. Since Venus is a harmonizing planet, these people will try to oblige what it is their partner (or friends, associates, etc.) most desire to experience/obtain via their relationship. This can lead to the Venus in the 12th person being overly giving in relationships, without receiving the same amount back from other people.

Since the 12th House has a tendency to obscure anything within it,
friends and partners may not really see what it is that the Venus in the 12th House person most needs from them. Therefore it can be quite difficult for the Venus person to make people understand what they need from the relationships they share even when the Venus person goes out of their way to explain those needs.

The 12th House can also have the affect of making the Venus person seem almost as though they do not even have needs in their relationships! This can certainly lead to them being taken advantage of by people who only desire self-serving relationships. There can even be a "self-undoing" tendency of the Venus in the 12th person to over-give in their relationships. Venus in the 12th House people may benefit from an exploration of CO-DEPENDENCY within their relationships, and from healing and releasing any co-dependent patterns they may find themselves repeating.

Another difficulty for this placement is that an idealized/fantasy relationship can often fulfill them far more than their actual relationships, because the 12th House lends a fantastic imagination and also a desire to experience spiritual AGAPE LOVE. That type of love is very rare in this world, and so a person with this Venus placement may simply IMAGINE it and/or revel in romanticized relationships that exist in fictional worlds such as film and literature. This can be one way to access the ideal relationship that seems to evade them in their real lives.

On occasion, a Venus in the 12th person can utilize their intuitive awareness of what other people want/need from relationships to MANIPULATE those people. This can be especially true of Venus in 12th people who, due to their own relational needs being so often neglected, have decided that the only real way to meet their needs in relationships is to be manipulative.

Your best and most fulfilling relationship will be with the divine. When you prioritize this relationship, your other personal relationships will fall into place in more satisfying ways.

MARS in the 12th House Difficulties
When someone's Mars is in the 12th House, their ability to act with self-determination is thwarted. Our Mars shows how we want to act on our impulses without advice, influence, or control from others. It is our ability to put ourselves and our instincts first, understanding that it is not always necessary to take other people into account when determining our best course of action.

However, with Mars in the 12th House, it becomes difficult to reap the full benefits of acting from self-interest and self-determination. Other people seem to want to tell the Mars person what to do or what not to do at every turn. Sometimes, the strong influences of others over the actions of Mars in the 12th House people are covert so that the Mars person does not even realize how they are being manipulated to act in a certain manner.

There can be a build-up of resentment within the Mars in the 12th House person that can result in demonstrations of anger against those who have thwarted their ability to act of their own free will. Even anger itself will not feel totally satisfying to a person with Mars in this placement, as if you could never feel satisfied no matter how much you rail against the people and circumstances that have been holding you back.

As with other 12th House placements, people with Mars here need time spent in solitude so they can determine what they want to do with their lives and how. This separation from others also serves to greater firmer boundaries (physical, psychic and emotional) so that the influence of others on the Mars person's actions cannot be so strong and inhibiting.

Healthy methods of releasing anger and resentment (exercise, journalling, speaking to a therapist, etc.) are very important to Mars in the 12th House people. Sometimes you may not even be aware of how angry you are about something until it has built up to the point of explosion. For your health and well-being, managing stress, anger and resentment will be very important. You do not deserve to be living like a pressure cooker! You deserve to have sovereignty over your actions. Healthy processing and centering through meditation can clear away the sometimes unseen influences of others so that you can be assured that your actions are YOUR OWN will at work, and not the will of anybody else.

It is PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE to take actions that are yours and yours alone. Mars in the 12th House can become erratically impulsive when it has been constrained too long, so make sure that you are regularly checking in with YOURSELF to make sure that your choices have not been covertly or overtly influenced by others. Otherwise, you may get wound up like a jack-in-the-box by other people pushing you this way and that and end up looking like the asshole when you eventually pop off! You may be justified in popping off, but the aftermath is most likely not going to feel good for you, so healthy attention to your free will in order to prevent such intrusions can go a long way to keeping your temper even and your life more enjoyable.
