It's interesting to see how few of those in the public eye are acknowledging Sinead O'Connor even after her death. How different for the celebrity Hollywood ladies who spoke of their #metoo moments. How applauded they were... their bravery still mattered, because somebody could still make money off of them I suppose. How do you make money off of aligning yourself in any capacity with Sinead O'Connor?

None of those Hollywood women, applauded for their bravery, spoke about the children who were...

7 of Wands: My 2023 Tarot Card of the Year!

Posted by Gabby Turner on Monday, December 26, 2022, In : Tarot

Every year for the past few years I have chosen one singular tarot card to serve as a lesson, guide, or indication of important themes/experiences I would encounter in the year to come. For 2023, that card is the 7 of Wands.

Hmm. Well it isn’t exactly promising, like the Wheel of Fortune. The 7 of Wands indicates a need to maintain ground gained. In other words, guard against situations/people who might threaten to topple whatever I have built.

The 7’s are all SPIRITUAL LESSON cards, t...

Gen Z’s Astrology: What Uranus, Neptune and Pluto’s placements during the Gen Z years tell us about this unique generation

Posted by Gabby Turner on Friday, September 16, 2022, In : Astrology
Gen Z (those born 1997-2012) were the first generation to experience the surf-able web from the time they were born. They are also the generation to grow up during the shift into globalization. They came to age as the amassed wealth generated by globalization for the few then lead the many into a zeitgeist of sudden awareness of how wealth inequality shapes power dynamics. With a burgeoning technological means of addressing shared concerns en masse, Gen Z grew up empowered to stand up for th...

Mental Child's Pose: the Two of Swords

Posted by Gabby Turner on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, In : Spiritual

Yoga teachers instruct you to go back to child’s pose at any moment when you are overwhelmed by the practice. Today my spirit guides used this as a metaphor to help me understand the importance of going back to a calm and serene mind when equally overwhelmed by a situation. “The 2 of Swords is your child’s pose,” they said.

 from the Spiral Tarot

Conflict with someone? Getting into a perfectionist mindset? Just go back to the calm and empty mental space represented by the 2 of S...

The Jupiter/Neptune Cycle and Historical Patterns

Posted by Gabby Turner on Friday, March 25, 2022, In : Astrology

Jupiter and Neptune form a conjunction to each other every thirteen years. The last time they were conjunct was in 2009, in the sign of Aquarius. This time, they will be forming their conjunction at 23°59’ Pisces, the sign they both rule. That makes this a particularly strong conjunction for them. The last time the two planets met up in the sign of Pisces was 1856.

Although a new planetary cycle is always significant in any sign, when planets are in the sign they rule, they have greater s...

Understanding 12th House Planets in the Natal Astrological Chart

Posted by Gabby Turner on Saturday, September 18, 2021, In : Astrology
In this blog entry I'll give an overview of how and why the 12th House often creates a difficult experience for those with personal planets there. I'll also give specific insights into how each of the personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars) operate in the 12th House.

The twelfth house is certainly an interesting place for a planet, especially a personal planet, to fall in a natal birth chart. The 12th House is sort of like the doorway between the world of spirit (the Great Beyon...

Why Twin-Flames Experience So Much Separation

Posted by Gabby Turner on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, In : Other Metaphysical
Have you ever wondered why twin-flames experience so much separation from each other? The connection you have with your twin-flame is meant to help each of you ascend. You will experience periods of merging followed by periods of separation until each of you has managed to ascend to a level that will allow you to remain in a stable union.

When you and your twin-flame come together, it is like two flint rocks being struck together, creating a spark that will propel you further into your spiritu...

The Golden Ratio of Relationships and Your Soul

Posted by Gabby Turner on Friday, January 1, 2021, In : Spiritual

There is knowledge and there is information. Knowledge can become wisdom when it has been applied effectively. Information is helpful, but it cannot transcend itself and become anything more than information.

I cannot remember where I first came across this knowledge that when it comes to relationships, we maintain harmony and balance when we try to ensure a ratio of at least 5 “good” moments with a person for every 1 “bad” moment with this p...

I Will Never Stop Loving

Posted by Gabby Turner on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, In : Other Metaphysical

Life could just as well be fiction. Perhaps it is. It is. But it is a play we must play out.

Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson never met, although they could have, and each in their own “queer” ways having changed poetry forever—untrapped the possibilities of it. Would they have even liked each other? Whitman, the bold political revolutionary (though literature classes have forgotten that of him) who lamented “I no doubt deserved my enemies, but I don...

Self-Love is One of the Greatest Acts of Service

Posted by Gabby Turner on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, In : Spiritual

This, self-love, has been one of my own greatest lessons. I have spent a lifetime questioning my own worthiness and my own goodness. I have been, as many of you may relate to, a compulsive giver. Giving my time, energy, love, and resources to others in a compulsive bid to find validation. Is that true giving? Selfless on the one hand, self-seeking on the other.

One of the greatest acts of service one can engage in is self-love. Unlike compulsive over-giving, which inevitably leads to depleti...

Sea Turtle

They heave me into the boat,
my shell and legs encumbered
with barnacles.

I hear the scraping of their knives,
their eager voices, the sound of
writhing disease hitting the floor.

I have been sick with attachments.
My saviors delight in freeing me
as equally as they will delight
in their after-beer of celebration.

I am relieved to lose these barnacles,
but there is a disease that feels
much deeper—

there is a disease that will slip back
into the cool water with me
when they let me go.

Lime Green in the Aura

What Does it Mean to Have LIME GREEN in the aura?

All of the loving, compassionate energies we commonly associate with the heart chakra (which is the green-colored chakra) will be present in anyone who has lime green in their aura. However, the lime-green shade carries its own specific energy as well.

The person with lime-green in their aura is very creative—in fact they can barely contain their creative impulses. Inspiration comes to this person in sudden,...

Moving Past Fear & Anxiety

Posted by Gabby Turner on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, In : Spiritual

I wanted to talk a bit about fear and anxiety, emotions that often lead us to seeking guidance from psychic readings. The function of fear is a biological, evolutionary one, and it does come in handy in certain circumstances. Imagine you are out in the woods and come across a bear--VERY SCARY!--right? Well, the fear that you feel in that moment serves only one purpose: to bring your awareness to something that you need to address. The most helpful thing you can then do is to switch out o...

What Are Spirit Animals? How to Work With Them? [PLUS: My Personal Experiences!]

Posted by Gabby Turner on Thursday, January 16, 2020, In : Spiritual

I love working with animal spirit guides. The first time I recall animals trying to deliver a message to me I was 18 and my Papaw (aka grandfather) was going back and forth between nursing homes and hospital stays. He was 83 years old, had dementia, and his body was failing him. As I was driving down the road one day, I passed five different animals, all of which were black in color. I cannot recall now, at almost 40 years old, specifically which animals. Most likely a cow, ...

Rumi and Real Love

Posted by Gabby Turner on Sunday, January 27, 2013, In : Other Metaphysical
I love the poet Rumi. I think many of us who tend toward addiction also tend toward desperate, chaotic attempts at "love," which in the end are not true, real, pure love from the heart. Love that comes of pleading and coercing is not real love. We cannot truly love another until we learn to truly love ourselves. How can I love myself today?

What do you know of Love except the name?

Knowing Who's Crushing on Who: on Being an Empath

Posted by Gabby Turner on Friday, January 11, 2013, In : Other Metaphysical

I've been very aware of other people's emotions ever since I was a child. I never realized there was anything particularly intuitive going on. I did often feel that I just "knew" certain things to be true but had great difficulty explaining why. "Just trust me, I can tell!" I would say to my friends, and simultaneously be frustrated because I was convinced they still would not understand. I had no idea this was an indication of intuitive ability though. I even remember when I was young, readi...

Conscious Contact

Step 11: Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

I don't necessarily think of God as a "him," but that particular wording issue aside, this is one of my favorite steps. I believe very strongly, and have for several years before joining Overeaters Anonymous, that there is always guidance available to us from "spirit," our "higher selves," from "God" or "t...

Past-Life Issues Resurfacing in the Dreamworld?

Posted by Gabby Turner on Friday, November 2, 2012, In : Other Metaphysical

Spirit is that voice that whispers into our intuitive ear, and sometimes she has a strange way of doing it. Dreams can be a real warehouse of intuitive information, but unless you are someone who enjoys symbolism, the poetry of dreams can often end up seeming like a jumble of unnecessary madness. I had a very strange dream last night, and had almost chalked it up to just that: "what a weird dream!" but when I decided to write it down I realized how pertinent it was to my waking life and emo...

Emily Dickinson's Astrology, Part One: A Loaded Gun

I have long had a fascination with Emily Dickinson, partly because of our shared birthday. Emily was born December 10, 1830 and I was born December 10th exactly 150 years later. From a young age I also enjoyed writing poetry and I encountered Dickinson's poetry for the first time when I was in middle school--it was the poem "I'm Nobody! Who are you?" in a children's book illustrated with frogs. :) I can't remember when it was I realized she and I shared a birthday,...

Painting the Nodes, Understanding their Rulers!

I was recently inspired by Michelle at Astrofix.com's blog post wherein she explored the meaning of her south and north node placements as well as their sign rulers. One of the greatest tools an astrologer has is their own chart, but oftentimes it is the hardest to decipher! It's like looking at a painting when you're an inch away from the canvas. It helps to step back a bit, depersonalize a little (hard to do when you're looking at your personal chart!) and all...

We Are Family: You Can't Choose Your Family, but You Can Choose to Love the Ones You're With

Initially I pulled the Lovers card. What should I say about LOVE? I asked, and pulled the 10 of cups and the 6 of Swords for clarification.
The Lovers card is of course about relationship and love. In this reading it is clarified by the 10 of Cups (the happy family card) and the 6 of Swords (the painful healing of relatio...

Song for Sagittarius the Wander, the Searcher: Alison Krauss "Gravity"

I left home when I was seventeen
I just grew tired of falling down
And I'm sure I was told
The allure of the road

And all the answers that I started with
Turned out questions in the end
So years roll on by
And just like the sky
The road never ends

(Chorus:)
And the people who love me still ask me
When are you coming back to town
And I answer quite frankly
When they stop building roads
And all God needs is gravity to hold me down

(Chorus:)
And the people who love me still ask me

In some ways it would be easier if I did not recognize that my thoughts create my reality. Because then I could continue to live from a victim mentality, from a blame-someone-else mentality, and not have to own up to the world that I have created for myself. I could say, "these are the horrible circumstances that have been laid upon my head, and woe to me, there is nothing I can do about them."

Posted by Gabby Turner on Sunday, April 3, 2011, In : Astrology
This morning I woke up earlier than usual for a lazy weekend day, planted some jonquil bulbs, re-potted a lilac bush I purchased last night, watered these and the other plants, and cleaned up the debris and mess than the landlord's maintenance workers have left around the house lately, and cleaned my computer. Other plans for the day include riding my bike back from downtown (where I left it Friday night after attending Knoxville's "First Friday" art gallery event), taking the recycling, ...

Homemade Holistic Kitchen Cleaner: Lime & Lavendar Anyone?

My best friend and I make homemade cleaner with white vinegar and essential oils, and I'm sharing the (very easy!) process of making this cleaner with you because it's a.) environmentally friendly b.) animal and people-friendly (aka, non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, and not a breathing hazard) c.) it cleans my kitchen counters better than ANY commercial chemical cleaner EVER has d.) it's cheap to make and e.) it has the added holistic-healing benefit of aromatherapy! Read on for the easy "rec...

Prana Energy: I want to live, I want to give!

Posted by Gabby Turner on Wednesday, March 30, 2011, In : Other Metaphysical
Lately I have been actively trying to draw-forth and utilize prana energy, which is available in never-ending quantities but which many if not most of us fail to fully vitalize ourselves with. Prana is the life-force energy that makes living more present and joyful. The following painting (by Scott Edward Harrington from the Google Creative Commons) is an excellent image of what living fully engaged with prana energy can be like.

I was listening to Neil Young's Heart of Gold tonight as...

Mars in Capricorn

Posted by Gabby Turner on Sunday, March 27, 2011, In : Astrology
I remember so many times as a child in school having the teacher chastise our class, saying, "You guys always want to make things harder than they have to be!" This is sort of the impetus of Mars in Capricorn. The planet Mars is our drive, our ambition, our body, how we assert ourselves, how we pursue our dreams and talents, our manner of expressing passion. Capricorn is self-reliant, slow-moving, interested in long-term stability, interested in conservation, old-fashioned, ambitious, and...

Full Moon Opposition Uranus: Family Distance and Togetherness

Posted by Gabby Turner on Thursday, March 24, 2011, In : Astrology
I spotted the infamous recent "Supermoon" last Saturday night while riding home in my sister's car with my niece asleep in the backseat. My sister had been visiting me from out-of-state for the past four days... this was to have been the night she left, but her misplaced phone charger was keeping her around a little longer. She couldn't find her car-charger after she had packed up and was ready to pull out, and with a 2 year old along she didn't want to be making a 4-hour drive at night w...

Little Wounds: Moon transits to Chiron

Posted by Gabby Turner on Friday, March 18, 2011, In : Astrology
Every so often I just know, without checking my transits, that I'm having a transit to my natal Chiron. Today was one of those days. I logged on to Facebook and I swear three posts in a row had to do either explicitly or not with weight/obesity. Last night someone I'm connected with through Facebook for purely political reasons posted the random comment, "On the plus side, fat people." I have no idea what that's even supposed to mean, though perhaps a pun on the word "plus" often associat...

Uranus Squaring Pluto +Sextiling Japan's Natal Pluto/Ascendant: Transforming Energy Dependence and Unhealthy Technologies

Posted by Gabby Turner on Monday, March 14, 2011, In : Astrology
Well if there's anything Uranus has taught us best over the last few days, its that predictive astrology (especially when it comes to Uranus!) is very limited. The earthquake in Japan with its correlating tsunamis and nuclear crisis took the whole world by surprise. I felt like saying, "Well I'm not surprised that Uranus was...surprising."

So it's impossible to say really how this nuclear crisis will play out. We really just have to empty ourselves of any feeling that we can control t...

Uranus in Aries in the 5th House: Sagittarian Suns, Sagittarian Rising, this is About You!

Posted by Gabby Turner on Sunday, March 13, 2011, In : Astrology
I've just recently started doing Sun-sign horoscopes. The premise here is that the 0 degree of the sign in which your sun is in (Sagittarius for me) begins the first house of the Sun-sign horoscope chart and each sign gets a whole house. This means that when slow-moving planets like Uranus change signs, they're also CHANGING HOUSES! If you set your natal chart to whole-houses, the same will be true. So for Sag suns and Sag ascendant folks out there, we've just had Uranus enter our 5th Hou...

Crisis in Japan--Pluto? Uranus? Neptune?

Posted by Gabby Turner on Sunday, March 13, 2011, In : Astrology
I was talking to a friend of mine earlier about the recent crisis in Japan and she was saying that it must be especially difficult for Japan to recover from this partly because they're still recovering from the collective psychological wound of the atom bomb drops on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which in the big scheme of things did not happen so long ago. And psychological woundedness is a strong influence on the very nature of Japan, as can be seen by Pluto's prominence there on the ascendan...

Uranus into Aries: Awakening Pranic Mars Life-Force Energy!

Posted by Gabby Turner on Thursday, March 10, 2011, In : Astrology
A few weeks ago I had a client come to me for a reading who was buzzing with Uranian energy. Her natal Sun in Aries was getting a charge from Uranus, the "Great Awakener," which had entered her sign in 2010 and is now about to re-enter. She had made major life changes, willingly, brazenly. She was drunk with Uranus! Not everyone feels quite as comfortable with the electric energy that Uranus brings, but she was willing to be at a place in her life where she could say, "Hell, I don't know ...

Retrogrades: It's Okay to Take One Step (even Two Steps) Back

Posted by Gabby Turner on Thursday, February 24, 2011, In : Astrology
I was driving home from work tonight admiring the peaceful landscape of the rural outskirts of Knoxville and I decided to use that moment to make a prayer for someone who called me recently looking for assistance--this person was having trouble (like so many of us) moving on from a life situation that was no longer good for him. So I said, "please help this young man move forward in his journey," and as I said those words "move forward," I suddenly backtracked. What if he needs at some po...

Horary Astrology: Will Egyptian Protestors Succeed in Overthrowing the Government?

Posted by Gabby Turner on Sunday, January 30, 2011, In : Astrology
EDIT: Since writing this post I've re-thought my interpretation of this horary chart. I'm leaving this post up, but please read my (hopefully) better and (definitely) more thorough interpretation of this horary chart HERE.

Political unrest is a constant, but a revolution is not, and we've been seeing a lot of the latter lately. I've been involved in social and economic justice activism for some time now, so I empathize with the Egyptian movement to oust dictator Mubarak in favor of a more...

Be a Fool: Open Yourself to all of Your Potential!

"Let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance."--Franklin D. Roosevelt

This morning I had a client who kept receiving the Fool card reversed. She was scared of many things, afraid to move forward with business plans that the cards indicated would actually be quite profitable, afraid to charge a fair price for her services for fear that people would...

The 8 of Cups: Catching the Train You Didn't Know You Wanted to Take

Posted by Gabby Turner on Saturday, January 1, 2011, In : Tarot
Carl Jung, famous psychologist and ultimate bad-ass, believed that we all share a collective unconscious and that Tarot, among other systems of divination, presents a way to tap into those collective archetypal memories/experiences/and knowledge.

8 of Cups by artist Michael Goepferd

So, buried down deep in the beautiful swamp that is the collective unconscious lives the energy of the 8 of Cups. The most well-known and widely-used image for this card comes from the Rider-Waite-S...

Chiron: Recognizing the Wound... and Healing It (Triggers from 29 Gemini Lunar Eclipse)

Posted by Gabby Turner on Thursday, December 23, 2010, In : Astrology
One afternoon at the age of 11, I awoke from unconsciousness in the backseat of my mother's wrecked car.  I remember the waking up itself feeling like being hit with a baseball bat, like being jarred awake.  My glasses had been knocked from my face and so the contents of the car were just a blur of their real selves.  I could hear my sister in the front passenger seat moaning (she had broken ribs) and could vaguely make out the form of my mother in the driver's seat, her still hand presse...

Welcome Back!

As we discussed in Part 1 of this series on Solar Returns, interpreting your Solar Return chart is a good way to prepare for the year following each of your birthdays.  The point is not to be fearful or complacent about the year to come, but to prepare for and take advantage of the energy that will be availabl...

I prefer to think of the Solar Return Chart in the same way I do the Natal Chart, which is that it does not determine outcomes or destinies in an inflexible way, but instead serves to highlight the ENERGIES available to you in the form of opportunities and/or frustrations that we can choose to take advantage of and navigate t...

Understanding Lunation Cycles

The New Moon marks the beginning of each lunation cycle.  It is the moment when the moon lines up with the sun in the same degree of the same sign of the zodia).  From the perspective of Earth, the moon is not visible at the "new moon" phase because it cannot reflect the sun's light in our direction.  Though seemingly cloaked in darkness, the moon does still receive and reflect the sun's light back towards the sun--an exchange of energy that vitalizes and ener...

Harvest Moon Equinox, September 2010

Posted by Gabby Turner on Saturday, September 25, 2010, In : Astrology

What is a Full Moon?

If you think of the Sun and the Moon as the minute and the second-hand on the zodiac chart, like hands on a clock, then the Full Moon is the moment when the tips of the second and minute hands (the Moon and Sun) are at their most opposite points in the sky.  This happens about every 29 days, roughly once per month.
