Astrological Basics for Understanding Your Natal Chart Reading:

Your “natal chart” shows the placements of the Sun, Moon, and all of the planets at the time of your birth.  It also shows us which sign was rising at the time of your birth, commonly referred to as your “ascendant.”

Your chart, like all charts, is divided into 12 “Houses,” which concern various areas of our lives, including partnership, career, friendship, and family roots.  Where your ascendant begins is where your First House begins.

Meaning can be found in your natal chart based upon (a) the sign placement of planets* (b) the house placement of planets (c) aspects between planets.

“Aspects” occur when one planet is located a certain degree from another planet.  Some aspects are “harmonious” and some are “difficult.”  A square aspect of 90°, for instance, is a difficult aspect, one which causes friction.  A trine aspect of 120° is very harmonious and creates an energy that you express very easily.

In your Natal Chart reading, I will discuss what I feel to be the most prominent and important elements of your chart.

*When astrologers refer to the Sun, Moon, and Planets collectively, they simply use the word “planets,” for ease, though of course the Sun and Moon are not really planets.

Ascendant in Leo, Moon in Aries

When you were born, the sign rising at the horizon was the outgoing, charming sign of Leo!  Additionally, your Moon was hanging out in the impulsive, courageous, and enthusiastic sign of Aries.  The ascendant shows us how our personalities appear to others on the surface level, and our moon describes our inner emotional world.  For you, the two seem to be fairly in sync.  Others see you as dynamic, a good leader, and someone who is willing to be the center of attention.  Your emotional needs are best met when you are able to live adventurously and independently.  With this ascendant/moon combination you are probably very spontaneous and fun to be around!

Sun in Cancer, 12th House, Square Saturn, Mars, and Pluto

When people think of their astrological “sign,” what they’re generally thinking of is their “sun sign,” or, the placement of the Sun at the time of their birth.  When you were born, the Sun was in the watery, emotionally-centered sign of Cancer.  Additionally, your Sun was in the intuitive, dreamy, escapist 12th House.  What does this mean?  You are likely very intuitive.  You know what’s going on with the people around you emotionally even if they aren’t making it known verbally.  This gives you the ability to be very empathic and compassionate.

You could have some degree of psychic or mediumship ability.  This is just another way that the intuitive qualities of this watery placement could manifest itself.  At the very least, you will have the ability to “know” things without needing a rational/logical explanation for how you came to that knowledge.

What you need to guard against here is being drained by other people.  Because you absorb emotional energy so easily, you are susceptible to taking on the negative emotions of people around you as well as the positive ones.  This is a good thing, in that it allows you to understand other peoples’ pain and empathize with them, but you are not obligated to actually “feel” their sadness yourself in order to be a kind person.  Remind yourself if you find that you feel energetically-drained around certain people or certain circumstances.  As a Sun in Cancer person, you will need to have a safe haven to escape to in order to recharge yourself emotionally and energetically.  Make this place your own, make it safe, warm, and inviting.

Your Sun is making several squares to other planets in your chart.  Square aspects are difficult, challenging aspects, but they are also aspects that sort of “irritate” us into dealing with them.  Kind of like an itch that you have to scratch.  Your Sun is Square to a conjunction of Saturn, Mars, and Pluto.  All three of these planets are concerned with ambition, though their energies express that interest differently.  You are likely a very ambitious person, though with the square energy you probably have difficulty figuring out how to direct that ambition towards actually achieving your goals.

Pluto brings a ton of will-power here, so while you may get frustrated along the way, you probably will reach your goals eventually.  Saturn brings obstacles, like lessons and tests along the way.  Every time you think you’ve finally emerged triumphant from your trials and tribulations, Saturn has another lesson for you to learn.  This can be frustrating, but it will also make you an incredibly strong and resilient person.  Mars’ energy makes you forceful, sometimes resistant to authority.  You will have to figure out for yourself to what degree it is appropriate or even helpful to express this anti-authoritarian energy, but nevertheless, it is there.

Mars in Libra, Opposing Moon in Aries

Mars is a self-interested planet, and here in your chart it is actually in the “relating” sign of Libra, meaning that you express your personal interests in a way that involves relating to others’ in a fair and harmonious way.  You want harmony, but you also want to get your own way.  You’ll probably try to find ways to get what you want without disrupting each other too much.

Conversely, the Moon is a planetary body interested in relationships and emoting, but here it is in the self-interested sign of Aries (the sign ruled by Mars).  So again, you relate to others in a way that is emotionally-self-interested.  Everyone deals with these energies (self-interest v. harmony with others) but because of the placement of these planets, it seems an especially influential energy for you.

Venus in Gemini in the 11th House, Trine Pluto, in Opposition to Neptune

The placement of Venus in a natal chart signifies how we socialize with others and how we draw romantic partners into our lives.  With a Venus in Gemini, you are very mental in your interactions with others.  You like lively conversations and want to talk to other people about your variety of interests.

Venus is also located in the 11th House of Friendship, so socializing and social networks are very important to you.  You likely have many friends and come across as friendly and personable.  You may prefer to keep people at a distance emotionally and have most of your friends as acquaintances rather than getting wrapped up in each others’ emotional and personal lives.

With Venus trine Pluto, however, when you do find people who you really “click” with, the Plutonic energy here makes you want to bond with them in a very emotionally intense way.  You want to be able to express your authentic self (not just the casual self you show to most of your acquaintances) with a select few people who you have this kind of bond with, and you want to know them inside-and-out as well.  You want to know what “makes them tick,” in other words.

Venus in opposition to the dreamy planet Neptune means that you often have an unrealistic fantasy version of your romantic partners or potential romantic partners.  You may tend to idealize these prospective partners only to be let down when you find out they don’t really stand up to this illusion.

With Venus in aspect to both Pluto and Neptune, you have the ability to form very emotionally fulfilling relationships with others, but you need to be careful that in the process you don’t get yourself hurt by trying to rush in too quickly.  Take your time and make sure that what you *feel* to be true about someone actually *is* true.  I think the fact that your Venus is in an air sign (air signs are more mental and emotionally guarded than other signs) and an air house as well will be very helpful to you along these lines.

North Node in Cancer in the 12th/ South Node in Capricorn in the 6th

The North Node tells us what abilities our soul needs to improve upon and master in our current incarnation.  The South Node shows us an ability we have mastered well in previous incarnations.   We may often fall back upon “south node” ways of living because they are comfortable and natural to us, and that is fine, but we will experience greater spiritual growth when we reach toward a fuller expression of our North Node self.

What does this mean for you?  Your North Node in Cancer in the 12th tells you to be in touch with your intuitive, compassionate, idealistic, empathetic self.  It tells you to nurture and allow yourself to receive nurturing.  Be open to insight and inspiration even if they fall out of nowhere.  Allow yourself proper time to be alone with your thoughts, or even to be alone *without* your thoughts, as meditation will probably be a very helpful way for you to tap into your natural intuitive center.

Your South Node expression is a little bit of a workaholic!  Work and ambition seem natural to you.  You like to always be busy, but you also want the work you do to have some goal or to be creating some foundation for growth.  You should utilize your South Node capabilities because they are strengths for you, but be careful not to prioritize an outward, ambitious way of being over your inward, self-expressive way of being.  You can be both!
